So, You Think You’re an Ambivert?
A case for the Heart-1st approachThe Truth About Why Your Personality Tests Keep Changing
If you’ve ever taken the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and gotten different results each time, or felt confused about whether you’re an introvert or extrovert, you’re not alone. Many people conclude they must be “ambiverts”. That they are somehow both introverted and extroverted depending on the situation.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: While MBTI theory itself doesn’t technically recognize “ambiverts” as a separate type, popular psychology has created this label to explain away inconsistent results. Whether you call it ambiversion or not, the confusion points to something deeper that no personality test addresses: your heart.
The real reason your results keep changing isn’t because you’re magically both personality types or because you’re “balanced.” It’s because you’re taking these assessments with a wounded heart, creating internal conflict that makes accurate self-assessment impossible.
Battery Pack or Wireless Charger?
Think of introversion and extroversion not as personality traits, but as Energy Management Systems (EMS). Like electronic devices, you have one primary way of connecting to recharge your power. We all have been part of those conversations when our phones are blinking with “charge me now” indicators. Asking around, “Does anyone have a charger I can borrow?”, only to be met with the wrong type of connection cable. It is the same way with our EMS, in or out?
INTROVERTS = Battery Pack
- Internal energy storage that gets depleted through use
- Need to “plug in” to solitude and quiet to recharge
- Can function for extended periods once fully charged
- External stimulation drains the battery faster
- Recharging happens through internal processing and reflection
Etymology breakdown: Intro- (inward) + -vert (to turn) = “turning inward for energy”
EXTROVERTS = Wireless Charger
- Need constant connection to external energy source
- Get energized through interaction with environment and people
- Function optimally when “plugged into” stimulation
- Internal isolation causes energy to drop quickly
- Charging happens through external engagement
Etymology breakdown: Extro- (outward) + -vert (to turn) = “turning outward for energy”
You can’t be both a battery pack AND a wireless charger simultaneously. Your nervous system has one primary energy management design.
The Head-Heart Conflict Problem
When your heart is operating under generational strongholds or personal wounds, it creates a disconnect between your authentic design and how you show up in the world. This internal conflict makes you think you’re “changing personalities” when you’re actually just experiencing:
- Wounded patterns that contradict your true design
- Survival mechanisms that override your natural energy flow
- Generational programming that fights against your authentic self
The Result? You take personality assessments while internally at war with yourself, leading to inconsistent and confusing results.
Why Your Heart Tree Archetype Changes Everything
Here’s what no one tells you: your heart design determines HOW your introversion or extroversion shows up. This is why traditional personality typing fails – it ignores the foundational layer that shapes everything else.
The Seven Heart Tree Archetypes
Based on Isaiah 41:19 and Romans 12, every person has one of seven heart designs that determine how their introversion or extroversion actually functions. Your heart archetype is the foundation that shapes everything else about how you process energy and interact with the world.
Without understanding wounds affecting your heart design first, trying to determine your ‘personality type’ is like trying to tune a radio without knowing what frequency you’re supposed to be on.
How Heart Wounds Create “Ambivert” Confusion
Here’s what’s actually happening when you think you’re “both”: your wounded heart is creating internal conflict that distorts how your mind’s energy system functions.
Your heart tree archetype is NOT introverted or extroverted!
That’s your mind’s wiring for dopamine and neural baseline activity. When your heart operates from wounded patterns instead of authentic design, it creates chaos that makes your mind’s energy system appear inconsistent.
The Real Internal War:
Battery Pack Minds (Introverts): When their heart is wounded, the internal turmoil forces them to seek external validation and stimulation they don’t actually need. They exhaust themselves trying to be social and outgoing because their wounded heart is driving behaviors that contradict their mind’s low dopamine needs.
Wireless Charger Minds (Extroverts): When their heart is wounded, fear and protection mechanisms cause them to withdraw from the external stimulation their mind actually requires. They deprive themselves of the social interaction and environmental engagement their high dopamine needs demand.
This creates the “ambivert” illusion – your mind’s consistent energy system gets overridden by wounded heart patterns, making you think your personality type is changing when it’s actually your heart wounds forcing your mind to operate against its natural design.
This internal war between wounded patterns and authentic design is what creates the “I’m both” confusion. You’re not both – you’re wounded.
Heart-Healed Clarity: How Each Archetype Truly Functions
When Your Heart Is Healed, Your Energy Design Becomes Clear.
Here are a couple examples to help you see the difference between heart types.
Healed Cedar
Introverted: Quietly contemplative, takes others into consideration, forms solid 1:1 relationships, retreats to recharge authentically, gets own needs met without guilt.
Extroverted: Collaborates with others to solve problems, intense and fast-moving but meets others at their pace, gives grace and loves the underdog with appropriate passion.
Healed Myrtle
Introverted: Develops safe friends to ask for help from, lives by faith not sight, balances principles and relationships, empowers others, holds people accountable interdependently.
Extroverted: Releases truths to empower people, high work ethic, accepts discussing new ideas with healthy loyalty and boundaries, stops gossip, operates in supernatural strategies.
These two examples show just how the energy managment system shows up for the different heart types depending on their woundedness. There are seven heart types total, however this article is about presenting the concept, not helping you diagnose. Below we will go more in depth of how each Tree Archetype creates Ambivert confusion. Or take the assessment to find out what your Tree Archetype is, it is free and no sign-up required.
The Double-Minded Pattern: When Heart Wounds Create Mental Instability
Scripture warns that “a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways” (James 1:8). This perfectly describes what happens when wounded heart patterns override your mind’s consistent energy design, you become internally divided, pulled between your authentic wiring and survival mechanisms.
How Different Tree Archetypes of the Heart’s Design Create “Ambivert” Confusion:
Cedar Trees: When wounded, they seek extreme escape through withdrawal, appearing deeply introverted. But when pressured, they become explosively extroverted in unhealthy ways – jumping from isolation to aggressive social engagement. Their mind’s consistent energy system gets hijacked by this emotional whiplash between “driven to extreme escape” and “driven to extreme decisions of avoidance.”
Acacia Trees: When wounded, they oscillate between over-committing to help others (forcing extroverted behaviors to feel needed) and then withdrawing when overwhelmed by the very people they’re trying to serve. They become meddlesome and seek easy ways to help, then crash into passive victim patterns, appearing to change personality types.
Myrtle Trees: When wounded, they either become know-it-alls who loudly disagree and gossip to prove their intelligence (forcing extroverted behaviors), or they withdraw into selective responsibility and procrastination (forcing introverted behaviors). Neither matches their authentic mental energy design.
Pine Trees: When wounded, they either exploit others for validation and become frugal with family while generous with outsiders (creating confusing social patterns), or they isolate in controlling manipulation believing they need to withhold resources. The pendulum swing between these patterns creates personality confusion.
Olive Trees: When wounded, they oscillate between being the “life of the party” (forcing extroverted thrill-seeking) and complete avoidance of difficult conversations (forcing introverted conflict-avoidance), neither reflecting their authentic energy needs.
Fir Trees: When wounded, they swing between exploiting others for selfish gain through public pressure (forced extroversion) and isolating in control believing “no one can do it like me” (forced introversion).
Box Trees: When wounded, they either accommodate everyone to avoid conflict (appearing extroverted through people-pleasing) or withdraw completely when overwhelmed by absorbing others’ emotions (appearing introverted through emotional self-protection).
Real Example: Sarah’s “Ambivert” Journey
Sarah thought she was an ambivert because she loved connecting with people but constantly burned out from social interaction. She’d throw herself into helping everyone around her, then crash and isolate for weeks, confusing her friends and frustrating herself.
After going through our Heart-First process, Sarah discovered she was actually a wounded Acacia Tree with a Battery Pack mind (true introvert). Her “extroverted” helping behaviors were driven by wounded patterns of over-committing to feel needed, not authentic energy management. Once she healed those heart wounds, she learned to serve others without depleting herself and embrace her need for solitude without guilt.
This internal division, when the heart wounds fighting against mind design, creates the unstable, contradictory patterns that make people think they’re “both” introvert and extrovert. As Proverbs 14:14 states, “The backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways.” When your heart operates from wounded patterns instead of authentic design, you’re filled with contradictory behaviors that oppose your true nature.

Cedar – Acacia – Myrtle – Olive – Pine – Fir – Box Tree
You’re not both. You’re divided.
Why This Matters for Your Identity
Understanding your true Energy Management System is crucial because:
- Self-Care Becomes Accurate – You’ll know how to actually recharge instead of trying methods that drain you further
- Relationships Improve – You’ll stop forcing yourself into social patterns that don’t fit your design
- Decision-Making Clarifies – You’ll make choices that align with your authentic energy needs rather than fighting against them
- Personal Development Works – You’ll pursue growth strategies that work WITH your design instead of against it
The Path Forward: Heart-First Identity
The solution isn’t accepting that you’re “both” personality types. Modern psychology research, including Grant’s 2013 study in Psychological Science that popularized the “ambivert advantage,” attempts to explain situational personality changes through behavioral flexibility rather than addressing the root cause of internal inconsistency.
The solution is healing the heart wounds that create the internal conflict preventing accurate self-assessment.
When your heart operates from its true design rather than protective patterns, your mind can accurately assess your authentic preferences. The MBTI becomes reliable because there’s no longer internal war distorting your responses.
This is why our approach starts with heart healing first, then mind alignment. We don’t just give you another personality test – we help you resolve the internal conflicts that make accurate typing impossible.

1 Thessalonians 5:21 – Amplified Bible But test all things carefully [so you can recognize what is good]. Hold firmly to that which is good.
Acts 17:11 Now the Bereans were more noble-minded than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true.
1 John 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
1 Corinthians 14:29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.
Philippians 1:9-10 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, / so that you may be able to test and prove what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,
May you be richly blessed and washed in His Word!
