Discover: How do YOU Hear God?

To love God with everything we have, we must truly understand how to hear Him. For years, you may have wondered why certain spiritual practices work powerfully for others but leave you feeling disconnected. Why does your friend encounter God deeply through worship while you find Him more clearly in Scripture study? Why do some people receive instant direction while you need time to process? Why does that teaching on “how to hear God’s voice” feel like it’s describing someone else’s experience entirely? Does this make your question your faith? Keep you in confusion?

The answer is simpler than you think: 

God designed your heart with a unique way to connect.

Just as your physical body has distinct features that make you recognizable, your spiritual design has distinct faculties that determine how you most naturally connect with God. Understanding these pathways isn’t about limiting God, it is about recognizing how He already wired you to hear Him most clearly. We’ve been referring to these as your connection pathways, because not only is this how you hear God, but it also how you connect and experience the world around you. Quick disclaimer, things you will not see on here, Vision, dreams, experiences etc, as there are NOT what we are discussing here. We are bringing to light the distinct ways that God has designed for each heart type to connect with him and others. So let’s continue on to explore what these Connection Pathways are. 

Three Connection Pathways

Many have been taught that there are 6 types that hear God through their head and only one that hears God uniquely through their heart. I am one of those that was told this, but it never sat well with me. Why would God single me and those like me to be the only ones who can connect heart to heart with God and others. Then the challenge surrounding connecting with others, especially OLIVE emerged. After months of seeking God on this with the Ipseity Graduates breakthrough happened. Olives were giving testimony about connecting with God spirit to spirit. This intrigued me so I went to the Holy Spirit and asked for discernment. I got a visual of the rainbow and felt a deep connection to it. It was hard to put into words at first, but then I realized it would be a spectrum, where there were primary, secondary and tertiary. We knew that there was Heart, Head and Spirit, but those were just too confusing. After much prayer God revealed these:

• THOUGHTS (head/mind)
• EMOTIONS (heart)
• FEELINGS (spirit/sensations)

Every believer has access to all three faculties, it is how our WILL gathers data to make decisions. But here’s the breakthrough: your heart design determines which pathway, or combinations of pathways that are primary for you. Some people hear God through one dominant faculty. Others through two working together. And some engage all three simultaneously. Knowing how you are hearing God, and how the interacts will greatly increase your ability to communicate and strengthen your relationships and your faith walk.

Connection Pathway Terms Defined

1. THOUGHTS – Mental processes, ideas, reasoning, cognition

• Hebrew: machashabah (מַחֲשָׁבָה) – Thought, plan, purpose, device, intention
  1 Chronicles 28:9 – “And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought [machashabah]. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.”
• Greek: noema (νόημα) – thought, purpose, mind, what is thought
  2 Corinthians 10:5 – “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought [noema] captive to obey Christ.”

2. EMOTIONS –  Physiological response dynamic felt within the body the deep “heart” of things

• Hebrew: racham (רַחַם) – deep compassion, womb-love, emotional mercy
  Jeremiah 31:20 – “Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he my darling child? For as often as I speak against him, I do remember him still. Therefore my heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy [racham] on him, declares the Lord.”
• Greek: splanchna (σπλάγχνα) – literally “bowels,” the seat of deep emotions, tender mercies, compassion
  Colossians 3:12 – “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts [splanchna], kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.”Philippians 1:8 – “For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection [splanchna] of Christ Jesus.”

3. FEELINGS – Subjective sensory experiences, can be physical or emotional sensations

• Hebrew: kereb (קֶרֶב) – inward parts, inner being, the place of subjective internal sensing
  Psalm 51:6 – “Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being [kereb], and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.”
  Job 38:36 – “Who has put wisdom in the inward parts [kereb] or given understanding to the mind?”
  
• Greek: aisthēsis (αἴσθησις) – perception, sensation, feeling, the faculty of sensory/spiritual discernment
  Hebrews 5:14 – “But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment [aisthēsis] trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”

Why This Matters for Your Spiritual Life

When you don’t understand your design, you:

• Force yourself into others’ hearing patterns that don’t fit your wiring
• Miss God’s voice because you’re listening in the wrong “frequency”
• Feel spiritually inadequate when methods that work for others leave you empty
• Exhaust yourself trying to maintain spiritual practices that drain rather than fill you

But when you discover YOUR pathway, everything shifts:

• You recognize God’s voice faster because you know where to “listen”
• You create environments that actually connect you to Him
• You stop second-guessing whether God is speaking
• You honor others’ different pathways instead of judging them

How to Use This Tool

This framework identifies seven distinct hearing/connection pathways based on biblical precedent and confirmed through extensive research with healed individuals of each heart design.

As you read through each pattern:

1. Don’t just look for yourself – Read all seven to understand the people in your life
2. Notice your breakthrough moments – When have you heard God most clearly? What environment were you in?
3. Identify what drains you – Which spiritual practices feel forced or empty?
4. Look for the biblical pattern – Does your experience match these examples?
5. Test it practically – Create space for YOUR primary pathway and see what happens

A word of caution: You’ll likely see yourself in multiple patterns because we ALL use head, heart, and spirit to some degree. The question isn’t “Do I ever use this?” but rather “Is this my PRIMARY or NATURAL pathway?” Look for where you experience the most ease, the clearest connection, and the deepest breakthrough.

The Goal: Freedom to Be Who God Made You

This isn’t about putting people in boxes, it’s about setting them free from all boxes they were never meant to fit in. God doesn’t want you to become someone else’s version of spirituality. He wants you to flourish in the design He gave YOU.

Churches often emphasize one or two pathways while neglecting others, which systematically wounds certain heart designs. Understanding these patterns helps leaders create environments where ALL believers can connect with God in their design, not just those who match the pastor’s hearing pattern.

How do you hear God?

Tree archetypes all hear God uniquely, this is why this is not a universal answer for all on how we actually hear God. However, when we broke these three down by Archetype the pattern becomes clear how we are all wonderfully made to connect with God and with others. While there are 3 types that only have one aspect, they are not at a disadvantage as that mode becomes more refined. Those who have two, while this gives a litmus test to balance the input, it can also cause a very unsettling and disjointedness when they are not in alignment. And those who are Fir, the only Tri-connectors, they have a unique challenge to not operate in their double-edge sword to protect themselves, but to step forward in the synergy of all 3 modes to bring out the covenant protection for whatever they are called in.

Read through the seven patterns below. Pay attention to which one makes you think, “Yes! That’s exactly how I experience God. I just didn’t have words for it before.” Give yourself permission to pursue God through YOUR design, not someone else’s.

Cedar connect via Thoughts & Feelings

How They Hear: Prophetic revelations come through both thought as well as sensory feelings. Sometimes the intensity of the sensory enhances the thoughts giving the passion and urgency of feeling everything must be done immediately. They FEEL IT and so it MUST be done NOW is where this intensity comes from. This why someone with this tree for their heart design has an urgency about them, and almost feels like they live in the future.

Biblical Examples:

• Peter – Received direct revelation: “You are the Christ” (Matthew 16:16-17)
• Elijah – Still small voice after processing earthquake and fire (1 Kings 19:12-13)
• Ezekiel – “The word of the Lord came to me” throughout the book of Ezekiel
• Miriam – Called a prophetess (Exodus 15:20)

Scripture Foundation:

“Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing. Miriam sang to them: ‘Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and rider he has hurled into the sea.'” – Exodus 15:20-21

“The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’ Then a great and powerful wind… but the Lord was not in the wind… an earthquake… but the Lord was not in the earthquake… a fire… but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face… – 1 Kings 19:11-13

“The word of the Lord came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, by the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians. There the hand of the Lord was on him.” – Ezekiel 1:3

“The Spirit then lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the strong hand of the Lord on me.” – Ezekiel 3:14

“‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus replied, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.’ – Matthew 16:16-17

“Then a voice told him, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.’ ‘Surely not, Lord!’ Peter replied… The voice spoke to him a second time…” – Acts 10:13-15

Testimonial: “He shows me pictures and talks to me about them. So thoughts and feelings. I know in my knower. Sometimes He gives me short phrases. All kinds of ways.” 

Key Characteristic: Cedars tap into the MIND of God through prophetic revelation that they then process and declare those thoughts and feelings together. They see truth in black and white, because of this clarity of thought, with the confirmation of the “feels” and deliver it with passion (which others can perceive as intense if they do not understand that it is indeed passion.)

Acacia connect via Emotions & Feelings

How They Hear:  Acacia receives input/data through a filter of both emotions and feelings. They filter what they hear through their emotions and feelings what needs to be done and for whom. These can feel conflicting at times, and can cause overwhelm in a world that forces mental cognition for commication.

Biblical Examples:

• Esther – Received spiritual guidance through Mordecai’s counsel for serving her people
• Joseph (Mary’s husband) – Angel gave practical instructions for protecting/serving (Matthew 1:20)
• Barnabas – Heard through community worship to serve Paul (Acts 13:2)
• Timothy – Received calling through spiritual mentorship for service
• Ananias – Vision gave clear service assignment: “Go to Saul” (Acts 9:10-16)

Scripture Foundation: “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.'” – Acts 13:2

“But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife… When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him.'” – Matthew 1:20-24

“Get up… take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you… So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt.” – Matthew 2:13-14

“In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, ‘Ananias!’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ he answered. The Lord told him, ‘Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul… But the Lord said to Ananias, ‘Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name’… Then Ananias went to the house and entered it.” Acts 9:10-12, 15, 17
Ananias FELT clear direction (feelings) and obeyed despite EMOTIONAL fear (emotions), both present, service through both

Testimonial: “I kinda don’t trust hearing God only in my heart, but I also can’t really tell them apart. I have suppressed them for so long, but now that I am letting myself have emotions and feelings, it is feeling very intense.” 

Key Characteristic: If they feel off in either it is hard for Acacia to come up with the words to express in thoughts what their emotions and feelings are telling them. Acacia walking with a healed heart and connect head are really a powerhouse combining spiritual obedience with heart-driven service. They can make great leaders, not just a Martha in the kitchen. God needs his servant leaders to learn to hear through both their emotions and feelings, and not be too quick to serve with what comes easiest to them.

Myrtle connect via Thoughts & Emotions

How They Hear: Study and understanding combined with a deep emotional commitment. They must both understand the materials, but also connect in an emotional way to the environment or people they are with, or learning from. If they cannot trust the teacher, organization or the materials, then they are not open to connect. Same goes for how they hear God, through trust in HIM and understanding His Word and experiencing God on a deep emotional level.

Biblical Examples:

• Luke – “Having investigated everything carefully from the beginning” (Luke 1:1-4)
• Daniel – Studied scrolls of Jeremiah, given “knowledge and understanding” (Daniel 9:2, 1:17)
• Isaiah – Deep theological understanding with prophetic heart
• Samuel – Grew up where “the word of the Lord was rare” – learned to treasure it (1 Samuel 3:1)

Scripture Foundation:

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow.” – Hebrews 4:12 “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” – Psalm 119:105

“In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.” – Daniel 9:2-3

‘Woe to me!’ I cried. ‘I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.’… Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!'” Isaiah 6:5, 8

Key Characteristic: Myrtles tap into the TRUTH of God through careful study (head) combined with deep devoted emotions. They need processing time to validate truth and sit with how their emotions are responding. They won’t move forward until they have accurate understanding of both in alignment.

Olive connect via Feelings

How They Hear: Direct spiritual connection through worship and encounter, and they way these are input is through feelings. Feelings are the sensory response to our environment or experiences.

Biblical Examples:

• Paul – Paul FELT the spiritual encounter, light, falling, hearing, pure spirit-to-spirit connection (2 Corinthians 12:2-4)
• Moses – Face-to-face spiritual encounters in the tent of meeting (Exodus 33:11)
• Jeremiah – “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” – intimate spiritual knowing (Jeremiah 1:5)
• Solomon – God appeared in dreams, wisdom flowing from spiritual connection (1 Kings 3:5)

Scripture Foundation:

“I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell.” 2 Cor 12:2-4

“As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?'” Acts 9:3-4

“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” – Romans 8:16

“These are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.” – 1 Corinthians 2:10

“But if I say, ‘I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name,’ his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.” – Jeremiah 20:9

Testimonial: “I find my prophetic gifting flows more naturally around people who are themselves open spiritually to God. If someone is more head-led, there’s not much flow. When I watch children worship and move, I can see what they carry in the spirit – some carry purity or breakthrough anointing. I sense their worship as they move.”

Breakthrough Environment: Authenticity is essential for Olives. They need sustained spirit-to-spirit connection with God to access their encouragement gift. Teaching-heavy environments without worship leave them disconnected. Important Note: Olive’s can get over stimulated by environments that are designed to move people into a state of emotional response. Olives may shut down if things are designed enhance their feelings and illicit a strong response. They may use this as an excuse to stay shallow, and not engage and instead seek surface level escape. Examples: scroll on the phone, find a reason to leave, volunteer to give appearance of being present, maybe even go talk to someone in the foyer and “miss the event”.

Pine connects via Thoughts

How They Hear: Prolonged mental processing and strategic wisdom (all mind)

Biblical Examples:

• Job – Processed suffering until profound wisdom emerged: “My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you” (Job 42:5)
• Abraham – Processed covenant promises over decades of mental wrestling with God’s plan
• Jacob – Wrestled with God through the night, processing until breakthrough (Genesis 32:24-30)
• Matthew – Tax collector requiring strategic/financial thinking, detailed documentation

Scripture Foundation:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” – James 1:5

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” – Proverbs 2:6

“But Abram said, ‘Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?’… Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.” – Genesis 15:2-3, 6

“Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, ‘Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old?'” – Genesis 17:17

Matthew’s Gospel style is an excellent example of PINE’s way to hear and connect. All organized in 5 distinct teaching sections, systematic, detailed financial/tax language. Matthew processed STRATEGICALLY with detailed documentation, financial thinking, organized structure reflecting prolonged mental processing

Real Pine Experience: “I hear God in my head in several different ways. One is through things He impresses on me with impactful moments in a sermon or conversation. The second is that still small inner voice where I can dialogue with God. When I hear from Him, I know it’s Him. Once I heard a voice and the Holy Spirit said ‘Don’t listen to that voice. It was not me’, then He told me what I should be hearing. Very much hearing it in my head. The third way is KNOWING in my head that what is going forward is right, and also knowing when it’s wrong.”

Key Characteristic: Pines need TIME to process what God is saying. They hear through cave-dwelling contemplation, working through strategic implications over extended periods. Rushing them cuts off their hearing pathway.

Fir connect via Thoughts, Feelings & Emotions

Fir are the ONLY TRICONNECTORS 

How They Hear: This archetype is the most unique because they way they hear is through a balance of all 3. They can become confused at others ways of hearing God, because they access all 3. This balance helps them to operate in a way unique to others, that gives a synergistic movement that is incredibly grounded and powerful. However, to obtain complete strategic vision they need to be engaging a balance, not one over the other.

Biblical Examples:

• Nehemiah – Received complete strategic plan for rebuilding Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2:20)
• Noah – Direct instructions with specific measurements for the ark (Genesis 6:13-22)
• Boaz – Understood law (head), executed redemption (heart), trusted God’s timing (spirit)
• Joseph (son of Jacob) – Dreams of future leadership, strategic wisdom for provision (Genesis 41)

Scripture Foundation:

“The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it.” Nehemiah 2:20

“Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders.'” Genesis 41:39-40

Real Fir Experience: “I get a head heat with a knowing vibration. I can get SO hot when I do exactly as He instructs. It can feel like a door opening and warm bright light flooding in. Peace so tangible I can almost touch it. A core deep resonance. A deep knowing at my core. Warmth or weight on heart that can move around body when interceding. At its most fun it is expansive and full like I can jump outta my skin!”

Key Characteristic: Firs receive direct strategic commission from God requiring full engagement and immersing into the experience. Many Fir find they need to self-protect and don’t allow this full immersion into all three. When a Fir moves away from self-protection they then step into a powerful synergistic balance that moves mountains, builds walls and motivates the most unlikely of ‘misfits’ to success. (See Nehemiah) 

Box Tree. Emotions.

How They Hear: a deep knowing, a pull or draw. The relationship is a conversation that never ends, it is completely relational and experienced through the emotions. The words are said, but it is the emotion in which the word is conveyed. God will say words, but it is the emotion that is the connection point. It’s the patting on the head of admonishment, the joyful smile that envelopes our body, the overwhelm of grief over someone the Lord loves turning away from him. We feel it within the depth of our being, the words and the feelings are not the motivator behind the connection, the pathway to the depth of emotional draw, pull and response within our body.

Biblical Examples:

• John – “Beloved disciple” who leaned on Jesus’ chest (John 13:23) 
• David – Man after God’s own heart, deep calls to deep (Psalm 42:7)
• Ruth – Received through covenant relationships (Naomi, Boaz)
• Adam – Walked WITH God in intimate garden relationship (Genesis 3:8)

Scripture Foundation:

“You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water… Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. – Psalm 63:1-3

“Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me. – Ruth 1:16-17

Key Characteristic: Box Trees hear through intimate relational communion with God’s heart. They absorb His emotions, compassions, and heart for people through closeness and presence, not through information or instruction. The words they hear, will be connected to the emotions they feel, they cannot separate them from each other. This permits them to be considerate and accurate with where people are at in their walk.

Practical Application

Understanding your design helps you:

1. Stop forcing yourself into others’ hearing through others connection pathways – If you’re Olive, stop trying to hear through study like Myrtle. If you’re Pine, stop feeling guilty about needing processing time. 
2. Create the right environment – Olives need authentic worship. Myrtles need study time. Box Trees need intimate relationship. Firs need strategic vision moments. 
3. Recognize God’s voice faster – When you know your design, you stop second-guessing whether God is speaking because you recognize His voice in your connection pathway. This will help to cut down the times of second guessing to obey faster and with more confidence. 
4. Honor others’ different pathways – Churches that only emphasize teaching (Myrtle) miss Olives who need authentic worship. Leaders who demand quick decisions frustrate Pines who need processing time to hear what God is saying.

The goal isn’t to limit how God speaks, or put anyone in a box
but to understand how He designed YOU to hear Him most clearly.

I gratefully acknowledge Arthur Burk for pioneering the seven redemptive gifts of Romans 12 and their sanctification patterns. Distinct from that work, the framework I present here was received directly from the Holy Spirit. To honor the differences, I refer to this framework via the seven trees (Isaiah 41:19) used with the same format of the lists of seven but apply them to the Heart Design of the Biblical framework of Ipseity Approach™. The revelation that is revolutionary to this framework is the connection pathways of how each design hears God (Head/Heart/Spirit) and connects to the other designs. This hearing-and-connection mapping is my original revelation, not derived from Arthur’s teaching, and is offered as a complementary expansion for the sake of the Church.

Are you a victIM or a victOR? 

This teaching is meant to help you to engage in reading the WORD. My prayer is that you can see from this study the grave importance of KNOWING the Word for yourself. It is very important that you do not take anyone else’s word for it. It is wonderful to listen to teachings, but you must know the Word well enough to know when you are being led astray. 

I encourage you to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and discernment of what you are reading. It is important to get training in how to read the Word and apply it to your life in order to become a disciple of Jesus. 

TEST THE SCRIPTURES FOR YOURSELF! 

1 Thessalonians 5:21 – Amplified Bible But test all things carefully [so you can recognize what is good]. Hold firmly to that which is good.
